Autumn Pet Safety: Seasonal Hazards and Cosy Care Tips
Autumn brings beautiful colours — and hidden hazards for pets. Here's your seasonal guide.
Autumn Hazards
Mushrooms and Fungi
Wild mushrooms pop up in parks and gardens. While most are harmless, some are deadly and even experts struggle to identify them.
Rule: Treat ALL wild mushrooms as toxic. If your pet eats one, collect a sample and head to the vet immediately.
Conkers and Acorns
Conkers (horse chestnuts): Contain aesculin, which is toxic. Can also cause intestinal blockage.
Acorns: Contain tannins causing GI upset and potentially kidney damage. Dogs love to collect them.
Rodent Poison
Autumn is when rodent poison appears as mice seek shelter indoors. These are extremely toxic to pets — even secondhand if your cat catches a poisoned mouse.
Store bait stations where pets cannot access them. Use pet-safe alternatives when possible.
Seasonal Candles and Potpourri
Autumn scented candles and potpourri are popular but risky:
- Liquid potpourri: Causes chemical burns if licked
- Candles: Knock-over and burn risk, especially with cats
- Essential oil diffusers: Many essential oils are toxic to cats (tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint)
Shorter Days
Earlier darkness means:
- Use LED collars and reflective gear for evening walks
- Be more cautious at road crossings
- Consider high-visibility leads
Autumn Coat Care
Pets grow thicker coats for winter during autumn:
- Brush more frequently to prevent matting and distribute oils
- Don't over-bathe — natural oils provide waterproofing
- Check for ticks after walks in leaf litter and tall grass
- Watch for seasonal shedding — increased hair loss is normal
Comfort and Wellness
Joint Care
Colder, damper weather can worsen arthritis. Start joint supplements before winter hits. Ensure warm, dry bedding.
Immune Support
- Maintain regular exercise despite shorter days
- Keep vaccinations up to date (kennel cough season)
- Ensure adequate vitamin D (especially for indoor cats)
Bonding Time
Longer evenings are perfect for indoor bonding: puzzle toys, training sessions, grooming, and cuddle time.
