Dog Walking 101: How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Really Need?
Your dog's exercise needs depend on breed, age, health, and temperament. Here's your complete guide.
Exercise Needs by Breed Group
High Energy (60-120+ minutes daily)
Breeds: Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Vizsla, Jack Russell Terrier
These dogs were bred to work all day. They need long walks, off-leash play, mental stimulation, and a "job."
Signs of under-exercise: Destructive behaviour, excessive barking, hyperactivity, digging.
Moderate Energy (30-60 minutes daily)
Breeds: Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Boxer, German Shepherd
Ideal routine: Morning walk (20-30 min) + evening walk (20-30 min) + 15 min play.
Low Energy (20-30 minutes daily)
Breeds: Bulldog, Basset Hound, Shih Tzu, Cavalier King Charles, French Bulldog, Pug
Shorter walks, more indoor relaxation. Low energy doesn't mean no exercise — these breeds are prone to obesity.
Age-Based Guidelines
Puppies (Under 12 months)
Rule: 5 minutes per month of age, twice daily. Growth plates haven't closed yet.
Adult Dogs (1-7 years)
Follow breed-specific guidelines. Peak energy period.
Senior Dogs (7+ years)
Shorter, more frequent walks. Swimming is excellent — low-impact, full body. Watch for limping or stiffness.
Walking Tips
Before the Walk
- Check pavement temperature (7-second hand test)
- Bring water for walks over 30 minutes
- Ensure collar/harness fits properly
During the Walk
- Let them sniff — "sniff walks" provide mental stimulation
- Vary your routes
- Watch for fatigue: excessive panting, lagging behind
After the Walk
- Check paws for cuts or debris
- Offer fresh water
- Note any unusual behaviour
Beyond Walking
- Swimming: 10 minutes equals ~30 minutes walking
- Fetch: Great for high-energy breeds on soft ground
- Agility: Builds confidence and strengthens the bond
- Puzzle Toys: 15 minutes can tire them like a 30-minute walk
