Your First Week With a New Puppy: The Complete Survival Guide

Congratulations — you're a puppy parent! The first week is equal parts magical and exhausting. Here's your day-by-day guide to setting your puppy up for a happy, healthy life.

Before They Arrive: Puppy-Proofing

  • Secure electrical cords — puppies chew everything
  • Move chemicals and medications out of reach
  • Pick up small objects — socks, coins, kids' toys
  • Set up a puppy zone — a pen or gated area with bed, water, and toys
  • Buy the essentials: crate, bowls, collar with ID tag, leash, enzymatic cleaner, food, toys

Day 1: Arrival Day

Keep it calm. Your puppy is leaving everything they know.

  • Let them explore their area at their own pace
  • Show them water and food locations
  • Take them outside to potty every 1-2 hours
  • Introduce the crate with the door open and treats inside
  • Limit visitors on day one
  • Expect whining at bedtime — place the crate near your bed

Day 2-3: Routine Begins

Establish a schedule immediately. Puppies thrive on routine.

Sample Daily Schedule:

  • 7:00 AM — Outside for potty
  • 7:15 AM — Breakfast
  • 7:30 AM — Outside again
  • 8:00-10:00 AM — Play, then nap in crate
  • 10:00 AM — Potty break
  • 10:15-12:00 PM — Play, explore, training (5-min sessions)
  • 12:00 PM — Lunch and potty
  • 12:30-2:30 PM — Nap
  • 2:30 PM — Potty, play
  • 5:00 PM — Dinner and potty
  • 5:30-8:00 PM — Family time
  • 8:00 PM — Last water
  • 9:00 PM — Final potty, bedtime

Day 3-4: Start Basic Training

Keep sessions to 5 minutes max and make it fun.

  • Name recognition — Say their name, reward when they look at you
  • Sit — Hold a treat above their nose, move it back. Bum hits ground, treat!
  • Come — Start in a small space. Say come, reward approach

Day 4-5: First Vet Visit

Schedule within the first week. Bring:

  • Health records from breeder or shelter
  • A stool sample
  • Your list of questions

The vet will do a full exam, start vaccinations, and discuss parasite prevention.

Day 5-7: Socialization Starts

The socialization window (3-14 weeks) is critical. Expose your puppy to:

  • Different surfaces (grass, tile, carpet, gravel)
  • Household sounds (vacuum, TV, doorbell)
  • Different people
  • Car rides
  • Being handled (paws, ears, mouth)

Important: Until fully vaccinated, avoid dog parks and areas where unknown dogs frequent. Carry your puppy to expose them to sights and sounds safely.

Common First-Week Challenges

Crying at Night

Normal. Keep the crate near you, use a heartbeat toy, be patient. Most puppies sleep through the night within 1-2 weeks.

Potty Accidents

Expect them. Clean with enzymatic cleaner. Take them out more frequently. Praise heavily when they go outside.

Biting

Puppy teeth are sharp! Say ouch and redirect to a toy. Never use physical punishment.

Not Eating

Stress can reduce appetite for 1-2 days. Offer food for 15 minutes, then pick it up.

Quick Answers

What do I need before bringing a new pet home?

Before a new pet arrives, have food and water bowls, age-appropriate food, a bed or crate, collar and ID tag, leash, litter box (for cats), grooming tools, and a vet appointment booked within the first week.

How long does it take for a new pet to settle in?

Most dogs follow the 3-3-3 rule: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, 3 months to feel at home. Cats may take 2–4 weeks. Keep the environment calm and establish a consistent routine.

What vaccinations does a new puppy or kitten need?

Puppies need core vaccines for distemper, parvovirus, and rabies starting at 6–8 weeks with boosters until 16 weeks. Kittens need vaccines for feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and rabies. Your vet will create a personalised schedule.
