French Bulldog: Complete Breed Health & Care Guide
The French Bulldog has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming the most popular dog breed in the US. Their compact size, minimal exercise needs, and affectionate personality make them perfect urban companions.
Breed Overview
Despite the name, Frenchies were actually developed in England by lace makers, then brought to France. Their bat-like ears and squished faces have made them social media darlings.
Health Concerns
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
Their flat faces cause breathing difficulties. Symptoms include snoring, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, and overheating. Some may need corrective surgery.
Spinal Issues
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and hemivertebrae are common. Avoid jumping from heights. Use ramps instead of stairs.
Skin Fold Dermatitis
Facial folds trap moisture and bacteria. Clean folds daily with a damp cloth.
Allergies
Very common in the breed. Food and environmental triggers. May need elimination diets.
Eye Problems
Cherry eye, corneal ulcers, and dry eye due to prominent eyes.
Heat Sensitivity
Extremely prone to overheating due to BOAS. Avoid hot weather, midday walks, and strenuous exercise.
Exercise
Low to moderate — 30-45 minutes daily of gentle walks. Short play sessions. Avoid intense exercise, especially in heat. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys.
Grooming
Brush weekly. Clean facial folds daily. Bathe every 4-6 weeks. Clean ears weekly. Short coat requires minimal grooming.
Nutrition
High-quality food with limited ingredients (for allergy management). Prone to obesity. 1-1.5 cups daily for adults. Avoid grains if allergic.
Training
Stubborn but food-motivated. Keep sessions short and fun. Positive reinforcement only. Can be difficult to housetrain.
