Can Dogs Eat Onions?

Onions contain compounds that damage red blood cells in dogs.

Details

All parts of the onion plant are toxic to dogs, including the flesh, leaves, juice, and processed powders. Onion powder is even more potent. Damage to red blood cells (Heinz body anemia) can occur even with small repeated exposures. Garlic, chives, and leeks from the same family (Allium) are also toxic.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Dark-coloured urine
  • Pale gums
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fainting

  • Green beans
