Details

Xylitol (birch sugar) is found in sugar-free gum, candy, baked goods, toothpaste, and some peanut butters. It causes a rapid, massive insulin release leading to dangerous hypoglycemia within 10-60 minutes. Larger doses can cause acute liver failure. Even small amounts can be lethal.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Collapse
  • Seizures
  • Liver failure
  • Coma

  • Natural honey (small amounts)
  • Unsweetened applesauce
  • Mashed banana
